This week's regulatory signals point in one direction: continuous oversight, continuous evidence, continuous accountability. In Martin King's latest Regulatory Roundup, he frames it clearly โ AI is forcing both manufacturers and regulators to rethink long-standing static models, with adaptive systems emerging where learning, monitoring, and improvement are ongoing.
That shift is showing up across the week โ from the new IMDRF AI/ML lifecycle draft, to EUDAMED's fast-approaching May 28 mandatory date, to fresh MDCG classification guidance, to honest conversations about MDR/IVDR notified body queue times. The static-approval era is winding down. Lifecycle accountability is the new baseline.
Heading to RAPS Euro Convergence in Lisbon next week โ if you're going, let's connect.

Bioexcel summarized the implications of the new IMDRF AI/ML Lifecycle Draft, signaling a clear shift in how AI-enabled medical devices will be regulated globally.
AI-enabled devices will no longer be evaluated only at launch โ they will be assessed based on how well they are governed, monitored, and controlled over time. The focus moves toward continuous lifecycle accountability, covering data quality and bias mitigation, real-world performance monitoring, and model drift.
For MedTech teams, this is a fundamental shift in how AI compliance will be defined. View the post >>
More than 150 people joined last Friday's MLVx Friday in Focus session with Leon Doorn for a practical discussion on AI and ML 510(k) submission lessons learned.
Drawing from direct experience, Doorn walked through where teams lose time, how validation burden can escalate quickly, and why early strategic decisions carry through the entire submission process. "My first FDA submission with an AI ML system was not that successful and it led to a very lengthy, complicated process and I learned a lot from it," he said.
๐ง One of the clearest takeaways from the session was his advice to keep the first submission focused: "Start small. Clear first. Expand later."
He also emphasized that cybersecurity and submission readiness need to be built into the work early. "Cybersecurity and SBOM are engineering work," he said.

This week's global regulatory signals point in one direction: continuous oversight, continuous evidence, continuous accountability.
AI is forcing both manufacturers and regulators to rethink long-standing static models. Adaptive systems are emerging, where learning, monitoring, and improvement are ongoing. At its core, AI is helping accelerate continuous refinement โ supporting faster alignment and better decision-making across the lifecycle.
Regulatory is becoming increasingly strategic, while Quality remains the procedural engine. Risk-based approaches are essential to ensure data quality, availability, and control.
